REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KENDARI -- The Southeast Sulawesi Health service said the number of the HIV/AIDs carriers in that province grew in 2014 from the previous year.
Head of the regional health service Asrun Tombili said the number of people infected by the fatal disease in the province reached 158 in the first 10 months of 2014 as against only 103 in the whole of 2013.
"The largest number of cases were recorded in the city of Kendari with 55 carriers ," Asrun said here on Tuesday.
The second largest number of 38 cases were in the district of Muna followed by the city of Baubau 27 cases and the district of Buton 16 cases.
Smaller number of cases were recorded in other districts such as the districts of Wakatobi 7 cases, Kolaka 5 cases Konawe 3 cases, North Buton 3 cases North Kolaka, South Konawe, East Kolaka and Konawe Islands each one case.
Asrun said what has been recorded might be only the tip of the ice berg that the real number could be much larger.
"Assuming that the ratio of number of cases detected is 1 percent, the real number of HIV/AIDs carriers in the province would be 158,000," he said.
The deadly virus has threatened not only those being the risk area , but also the whole people, he said.
"So far those found infected by HIV/AIDs are only individuals whose sexual lives are risky to being infected by the disease such as sex workers," he stated.
However, the disease could easily spread to people not aware of the risk especially young people who took drugs and live free sex life.
