REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government through the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing will encourage the development of livable cities by adopting a comprehensive approach and optimizing the budget.

"We will encourage the acceleration and development of livable and sustainable urban settlements," Public Works Ministry's Cipta Karya Directorate General Imam S. Ernawi noted here on Friday.

The directorate general, in the state budget plan (RAPBN) for 2015, will earn an additional Rp5.4 trillion, which means the total budget allocation will amount to Rp19.6 trillion this year.

Ernawi stated that the directorate general is targeting to reduce the 1,479.29 hectares of slum areas spread across 61 districts and cities.

Moreover, five priority programs to be developed by channeling the additional funds are increasing accessibility to safe drinking water, improving sanitation access, handling waste services, managing the border areas, and implementing the green city plan and preserving heritage and botanical gardens.

About Rp700 billion is allocated for the border management program in seven regions located in four provinces.

The target outlined in the National Mid-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2015-2019 to increase the access of people to drinking water and sanitation facilities by up to 100 percent requires huge amount of funds, Ernawi noted.

According to him, an allocation of around Rp128 trillion in the state budget is required to realize the target in the next five years.
