REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CIANJUR -- Floods inundated several hectares of rice fields and a number of houses in two villages located in Sindangbarang Sub-district, Cianjur District, West Java, as the Muara Cikadu River overflowed its banks. The floodwaters reaching 1.5-meter high also submerged shrimp ponds and cut off access to a bridge.
Floods caused severe damage to two houses and a shop in Cibentang and Muara Cikadu villages and submerged more than 10 houses in Cinungku village and several rice fields and shrimp ponds in Saganten village. "In addition to the houses, Cisadea Simpang Bridge located in Girimukti village is also flooded. Some logs were swept away," The head of the Sindangbarang community-based disaster mitigation unit (FKDM), Tatang R.M., said on Tuesday, February 10.
There were no reported casualties in the disaster, and the flood victims decided to stay in their homes despite the flooding, he revealed. "Flash floods routinely hit Cianjur in the rainy season every year. Local residents have been urged to stay alert and be prepared for floods," he noted.
Several provinces are currently experiencing flooding and landslides, with the rainy season reaching its peak between January and February.
In Gresik, East Java Province, three villagers were washed away and killed by the floods that recently hit Kajar and Gadding Watu hamlets, Menganti Sub-district. Jakarta has been flooded since Sunday following incessant heavy rains.
