REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUKABUMI -- About 1.2 million drug addicts in Indonesia are in critical condition and need immediate medical attention, the National Anti-Narcotics Agency's spokesman Slamet Rihadi said here on Friday.
"Of the 4.2 million drug addicts in Indonesia, 1.2 need immediate medical care," stated Slamet, after visiting the Lido rehabilitation center for drug addicts in Bogor, West Java.
According to him, the number of drug addicts in Indonesia has been increasing over the past three years. Most of them use methamphetamine, he added.
The government had recently declared that Indonesia was in a state of emergency over drugs. Many efforts have been made to eradicate the abuse of drugs. One of the measures has been free rehabilitation programs for drug addicts.
"Drug addicts should not be afraid to report themselves to authorities concerned. They will later be sent to free rehabilitation programs," Slamet pointed out.
Besides rehabilitating drug addicts, the government recently executed some drug dealers, including foreign nationals.
