REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Deputy National Police Chief Commissioner General Badrodin Haiti revealed here on Wednesday that he had already prepared the firing squad to carry out the executions of the death convicts in Nusakambangan.
"We have been ready. The number of death convicts is 10 (and so) times 13, so there will be 130 personnel involved," he stated after attending a cabinet meeting at the presidential office.
The members of the firing squad came from the Central Java regional police command, and they have already been dispatched to Nusakambangan, Badrodin noted.
Badrodin remarked that besides the firing squad, the police have also adopted measures to provide security to the members of the firing squad.
"So, the total number of personnel involved in the execution in Nusakambangan will be 250 (including 130 firing squad members)," he stated.
Attorney General HM Prasetyo noted that he had reported the plan to President Joko Widodo.
"He (the President) has known about it and referred its implementation to the prosecutor's office," Prasetyo added.
He is now waiting for the final preparations related to the executions to be carried out.
"Certainly, the ongoing process will continue. There will be no changes," he affirmed.
The attorney general said he was not in a position to disclose the exact date of the execution.
"I will do it in time. The executions indeed will not be done in front of the public. There will be no secrecy. When the time comes, you all will be informed," Prasetyo stated.
Three death row convicts of drug cases arrived on Wednesday morning at Nusakambangan in Cilacap, Central Java.
The three drug convicts are the two Australian Bali Nine pair, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, and Raheem Agbaje Salami, a Nigerian national.
Chan and Sukumaran were transferred from Krobokan Prison in Denpasar to Ngurah Rai Airport where they were flown in by a chartered Wing Air aircraft bearing the registration number: ATR-72-600 PK-WGO at 6:50 a.m. local time amid heavy rains to Cilacap, Central Java.
Escorted by two Sukhois and two F-16 fighter aircraft, the Wing Air flight carrying Chan and Sukumaran arrived at Cilacap's Tunggul Wulung Airport at 8:14 a.m. local time.
From the airport, they were transferred and arrived at the Nusakambangan Island under tight security at 8:50 a.m. local time, on Wednesday morning.
Several foreign countries, whose citizens are among those on the execution list, as well as the United Nations, have expressed their protest against the plan.
However, the Indonesian government is adamant that the executions will proceed as planned.
Indonesia has already executed six drug convicts as part of its efforts to combat drug trafficking in the country.
The six convicts were Namaona Denis of Malawi; Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira of Brazil; Daniel Enemuo, alias Diarrassouba Mamadou, of Nigeria; Ang Kiem Soei, alias Kim Ho, alias Ance Tahir, of the Netherlands; Rani Andriani, alias Melisa Aprilia, of Indonesia; and Tran Thi Bich Hanh of Vietnam.
Indonesia's new President Joko Widodo stated that no clemency would be granted to drug traffickers who have been sentenced to death.
"It (capital punishment) is still our positive law, and it is not the president who decides the death penalty, but it is the court's verdict. The president is only requested to grant clemency, but there is no clemency for drug traffickers," the president remarked here, Monday.
He pointed out that 50 people die every day due to drug consumption, and therefore, drug offenders should not be granted clemency.
"How can we give them clemency when 50 people die every day, 18 thousand die every year, and 4.5 million people need rehabilitation? I say no, no clemency for such crimes," he emphasized.
He affirmed that no country should interfere in Indonesia's legal sovereignty.
