REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The general chairman of the Golkar Party, Agung Laksono, said here on Wednesday that the party can minimally contribute to the government through Parliament.
"We have decided to contribute minimally through Parliament. Parliamentary contribution is huge," he noted after meeting with the general chairman of the National Democrat Party (Nasdem), Surya Paloh.
On Tuesday, the government through the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights issued a decision accepting the Agung Laksono-led Golkar Party.
The Golkar Party had been split between two factions led by Agung Laksono and Aburizal Bakrie.
Meanwhile, the Aburizal Bakrie camp has protested the government's decision favoring Agung Laksono and threatened to report the police if their protest is not upheld.
Agung reiterated a statement he had made earlier that the Golkar Party will leave the Red-White coalition and support the government of President Joko Widodo and Vice-President Jusuf Kalla.
He said he had not imposed any condition for supporting the government.
"We have set no conditions. We are sincere. It is alright if we are given a government post and it is also alright if we are not given one," he had stated.
According to Agung, the Golkar Party in its history has never been in the opposition.
Nasdem general chairman Surya Paloh, meanwhile, pointed out that every party has its own right to determine its political stance toward the government.
He observed that in the present situation, the government of Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla will be more stable, strong, and firm.
At the meeting, Agung was accompanied by other Golkar figures such as Zainuddin Amali, Priyo Budi Santoso, Yorryes Raweyai, Agus Gumiwang, Lawrence Siburian, and others. Several Nasdem Party figures also attended the meeting.
