REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MALANG -- The Indonesian police have named three people, who were arrested in Malang, East Java, on Wednesday, as suspects for allegedly being members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
"The three suspects, currently being held at the Ampeldento Mobile Brigade headquarters in Malang, are members of the network led by Salim Mubarok Atamimi alias Abu Jandal. They played exclusive roles in the ISIS network," Chief of the East Java Regional Police Command, Inspector General Anas Yusuf, said at the Malang City Resort Police Command post here on Thursday.
He stated that Abdul Hakim, one of the suspects, went to Syria in August 2014 and stayed there for six months for a military exercise, while Helmi Muhammad Alamudi, another suspect, acted as a coordinator and facilitator for potential members of the ISIS who were to leave for Syria.
Alamudi had also lived in Syria for a month to study the situation there and the channels to enter that country. The third suspect, Ahmad Janaedi, also went to Syria in 2014 to attend Camp Harairy with Abu Jandal.
Yusuf further noted that the police anti-terrorist squad Densus 88, which had arrested the suspects in cooperation with the East Java police, had confiscated items to be used as evidence, including handphones, ID cards, driving licenses, car ownership cards, CDs containing ISIS teaching material, and other items.
The East Java regional police chief added that each of the suspects had played a very important role, including recruiting and training, but were, indeed, members of the same network.
They also had direct links with one of the ISIS commanders from Malang, Abu Jandal, and it could be said that these suspects were a result of Jandal's recruitment efforts, Yusuf remarked.
The three suspects will be charged with Article 15 in conjunction with Article 7a of the Law on Terrorism.
"Today, we also investigated several locations in Malang, following up developments in the case. The number of suspects is still three. No new suspect has been caught yet," he affirmed.
The three suspects were caught in three different locations in the city of Malang. Hakim was caught in front of a cafe in Jalan Arif Margono, while Alamudi was nabbed around his residential area in Karang Besuki, and Junaedi in his home in Bumiayu, Kedungkandang.
Yusuf revealed that Junaedi was also a confidant of Salim Mubarok Attamimi, believed to be an important figure from Indonesia in the ISIS who caused a stir after circulating a video of him challenging the country's military commander through YouTube.
