REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAKASSAR -- Radicalism should be handled in line with Indonesia's interests, stated Hasyim Muzadi, a noted figure of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).

"Actually, a war is waging against terrorism and radicalism around the world. However, addressing terrorism and radicalism should be done in the interest of Indonesia," Hasyim affirmed here on Wednesday.

According to Hasyim, the role of Islamic scholars is important to prevent Indonesian citizens from going abroad to engage in jihad in accordance with the radical ideology of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Hasyim noted that we need to put forward the philosophy of the country to counter the influence of radical ideology in Indonesia.

In an effort to prevent the spread of the ISIS radical ideology in Indonesia, the National Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and South Sulawesi officials have taken preventive measures with the help of community and religious leaders, and academics.

Meanwhile, South Sulawesi Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo remarked that the efforts to unite all stakeholders in the province to prevent the spread of ISIS are carved in stone.

"All parties have to jointly make preventive efforts by immediately reporting to relevant parties if they find any suspicious movements in their neighborhood," the governor noted.
