REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of Asia-Africa Conference (AAC) 2015 to discuss the mechanism to enhance trade cooperation.
"The two leaders discussed the mechanism to improve trade cooperation between the two countries as trade with Iran is being hampered in the banking context," Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir stated here on Thursday (23/4).
According to Nasir, in terms of the banking context, the trade barrier between the two countries is the result of a sanction imposed by the United States on Iran.
"It is because Iran is experiencing a banking embargo from the United States, and therefore, Indonesia and Iran discussed how they can overcome it. Besides this, the two presidents also discussed ways to reactivate the joint commission between the two countries," Nasir noted.
Earlier, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister A.M. Fachir had highlighted the importance of reviving the spirit of economic cooperation between Indonesia and Iran, especially in the field of trade.
"For large countries such as Indonesia and Iran, the trade value of US$2 billion per year is still very small," the deputy foreign affairs minister said recently.
He affirmed that the two countries should revive their economic cooperation in a bid to increase the value of trade by US$2 billion per year.
