Police probe gas cylinder blast in Surabaya

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The police is investigating a gas cylinder explosion that left a 7-year-old girl dead in Bulak Banteng Lor, Surabaya, East Java, on Wednesday (13/5).

"The police is still trying to establish the cause of the gas cylinder explosion," Deputy Chief of the Tanjung Perak Police Resort Commissioner Mustofa said.

The body of the girl, identified as Putri, has been taken to Dr. Soetomo Hospital in Surabaya for autopsy.

The explosion also injured house owner Salma (38), Apiyah (65), and Dinar (7). They were all rushed to Karang Tembok Hospital in Surabaya for treatment.

Based on the preliminary results of the investigation, the 3-kilogram gas cylinder exploded due to a leak. The blast also caused walls of the house to collapse and fall on several people.

"We have yet to determine what led to the explosion, which caused parts of the house's walls to collapse, as we are still awaiting the results of the investigations from the scene," Mustofa explained.

Head of the Public Relations Sub-Division of the Tanjung Perak Police Resort Adjunct Commissioner Lily Djafar said that based on the preliminary results of the investigation, the gas cylinder exploded after it leaked.

"We are still investigating the source of the fire that caused the blast. Several witnesses have been questioned for further information," he affirmed.

Residents who live near the scene of the incident stated that they heard a loud explosion that prompted them to stay outdoors.
