REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The issue of synthetic rice made people felt uneasy. A health observer, Handrawan Nadesul, said that synthetic rice is a new case and there was no research to this type of rice. So, it is difficult to know its danger to human body.

"This is a new case, and there was no research to this case. So it is difficult to know its danger to human body,” said Handrawan, on Wednesday, May 20. The rice is considered made from synthetic plastic. Others said the rice was derived from potatoes, sweet potatoes, even synthetic resin.

"Resin is usually used to make sculptures, which serves to agglomerate. Of course this material is not safe for consumption,” he explained.

He also explained that resins different with borax which serves to preserve. In this case, to make tubers into granular grains of rice should be used coagulant such as resin. About the cost of production, he said the use of resin materials could lower production costs. For example, with half of the material could be used as one liter of rice.

Previously, a resident in Bekasi, West Java, named Dewi claimed to have received fake rice. Rice allegedly made of plastic synthesis when it cooked; it was difficult to mix with water.

The rice was purchased by Dewi in rice trader for 8 thousand IDR per liter. Nevertheless, in one liter, not all rice was fakes. Allegedly plastic rice was intentionally mixed with the original rice.
