REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Professor of Department of Plant Protection, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Aunu Rauf stated that it was possible tomcat beetle could exist in densely populated settlements, especially if there were factors that lure the beetles to move to other ecosystem or environment.

"Tomcat comes to residential because it interested on lamplight," said Aunu to ROL on Thursday, June 4.

He explained, tomcat beetle which has the latin name Paederus fuscipes could get out of its habitat due to interference, such as paddy harvesting that causes tomcat to look for a new place.

Besides its habitat, food sources also became a factor for tomcat migration. "Usually the insects that become prey were reduced, so that tomcat scattered to other places in search of food," he said.

Related to this, according to him, on the process, lights in neighborhoods have another influence. "When it’s scattered, tomcat will move towards light sources in the settlements," said Aunu.

Entering the dry season, he said, could also provide an opportunity for tomcat to move habitat. "Where the rainfall begins to decline, it gives flexibility to the tomcat to fly dispersed without physical interference from rain," he explained.
