REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- All four old factories of state fertilizer company PT Pupuk Sriwidjaja (PUSRI) in this South Sumatra capital have met their production targets so far this year.

Until early this month, the urea fertilizer production of the four factories totaled more than 700,000 tons, company spokesman Sulfa Ghanie said here on Wednesday.

"Hopefully the factories, which have been relatively too old, could continue with the production rate until the end of this year," Sulfa said.

He said the four units - Pusri 2, Pusri 3, Pusri 4, and Pusri 1B -- have operated normally that sufficient stocks could be maintained both in the factory location and in the company's working areas covering farm production centers in nine provinces in the country.

By June, stocks of urea fertilizer totaled around 40,000 tons at factory location and 50,000 tons in the farm production centers or district areas in the provinces of South Sumatra, Jambi, Bengkulu, Lampung, Bangka Belitung, Banten, Jakarta, Central Java and Yogyakarta, he said.

The four factories have operated with no significant problem that they could meet their production targets from month to month so far this year, he said.

The only one which is relatively young in age is Pusri 1B, which was built in 1994 . The rest have been too old. The oldest is Pusri 2, which was built in 1974, he said.

The company has sought revitalization by phases to keep the factories productive, he added.

Currently the company is building a new unit called Pusri 2B which will replace Pusri 2 with a production capacity of 907,500 tons of urea per year.

Construction of the new factory started in mid 2013 and it is expected to be operational toward the end of this year.

The new factory would increase the company's production of urea fertilizer to 2.61 million tons annually, Sulfa said.
