REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- The Kupang city administration is planning to utilize city garbage, processing it to produce household fuel, a city official said.
"Currently preparation is being made including provision of supporting equipment," head of the city cleaning office Obed Kadji said here on Thursday.
He said the city cleaning service plans to produce methane gas as household fuel as a substitute for oil fuel (BBM).
Currently implementation has reached the process of building pipe installations, he said.
He said the garbage in the city is enough only to be processed to produce household fuel.
Originally there was plan to process garbage to generate electricity but the garbage production is too small only 1 to 6 tons per day in the city.
"Generating electricity would need larger supply of garbage , up to 20 tons per day," he said.
He said methane is a clean gas and environmentally friendly and could produce high energy. A cubic meter of methane is equivalent to 0.48 kg of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
