REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The House of Representatives (DPR) has not ruled out the possibility of Law No. 1/2015 on regional head elections being revised in anticipation of a single pair of candidates contesting the election.

"Looking at the latest developments, there have been several views. We do not rule out the possibility that the law on regional head elections will be revised as one of the ways to improve it in case of just two candidates," DPR Deputy Chairman, Taufik Kurniawan, said on Tuesday.

He said that when the government and the parliament had deliberated on the law some time back, political parties had thought it was unlikely that a single pair of candidates would be contesting in the election.

"At that time, the political parties had doubts whether only two candidates would contest the election. But now those doubts have become reality," he said.

Taufik said he was waiting for an improvement in the system, especially in the four regions, which had a single pair of candidates fighting in the election.

"A meeting must be held to reach an agreement between the House Commission II and the government and election organizers," he said.

The revision would focus on anticipating a scenario where a sole pair of candidates would contest elections, he said.
