REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- Indonesia gained one gold and two bronzes in 12th International Geography Olympiad, Sunday (23/8). The Olympic competition was attended by hundreds of participants from 41 countries in Tver Oblast and Moscow, Russia.
The gold medal was achieved by Andito Jeremiah Adhyatma from SMA 8 Jakarta and two bronzes were achieved by Asri Hadiyanti Giastuti from SMA 1 Bogor and Melinda Gularso from SMAK 7 Penabur.
The four participants of Indonesia were led by Dr Samsul Bachri from ITB and Prof Dr Junun Sartohadi from UGM, with Titiek Suparwati, Wiwin Ambarwulan, and Sri Lestari Munajati as observers of Geospatial Information Agency.
International Geography Olympiad 2015 was hosted by the International Geography Union (IGU) and was held by the Olympiad Task Force under the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, in cooperation with the Russian Geographical Society and Tver State University and Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The event was annual competition of geography for young people aged 16 to 19 years old. The participants were the best students, chosen out of thousands of students.
Indonesia team's victory could not be separated from the assist and support of the Directorate of High School Education, Directorate General of Primary and Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, Faculty of Earth Science and Technology ITB, Faculty of Geography UGM, and Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), and also the Embassy in Moscow.
Samsul Bahri said that Indonesia was planned for hosted the International Geography Olympiad (iGeo) in 2017. The Olympic competition was scheduled to be held by the Ministry of Education and Culture with the support of the Geospatial Information Agency and some universities, among ITB, UGM, UPI and UI.
