REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Governor of Bank Indonesia, Agus Martowardojo, said in the mid of pressure, rupiah is still relatively controlled, compared to currencies of other countries. Other countries currencies are more depressed in against the movement of the US dollar.

"In the short term, we have to remain calm if there is pressure on rupiah, because many currencies of our neighboring countries are more depressed," Agus said, Wednesday (26/8).

Agus explained that rupiah and Indonesian stock markets are currently experiencing external pressure as a result of interest rate adjustment plan of the US Central Bank (the Fed), the low prices of world oil, and the devaluation of the Chinese Yuan.

However, the same conditions are also experienced by other developing countries, but Indonesian economic situation is much better, because the economic fundamentals are in good condition and has not shown any signs of crisis.

"Rupiah, throughout January to August, had depreciated by 13 percent, but Malaysia, Turkey, Brazil, and Europe was more depressed. Our currency was strengthen, compared to them," he said.

He ensured in order to keep trust of financial market participants, Bank Indonesia will always watch over the movement of rupiah against the US dollar so that the fluctuation will not be too significant

Agus said that exporters are appealed to no longer keep the US dollar, to anticipate if rupiah continues to depreciate and also to keep monitoring the movement of stocks in the stock market.

"I strongly recommend exporters to remove their dollar, so that there is supply or availability of dollars in the country. Because our current account was declining, there was still a deficit. So we need dollars to import," he said.
