REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, VIENNA -- The Austrian Interior Ministry on Sunday revealed that 11,000 migrants crossed into Austrian territory on Saturday, Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported.

It said the majority of people crossed via the Hungarian border, with 7,000 currently situated in the border town of Nickelsdorf. Other migrants were said to have crossed the Slovenian border into the Austrian state of Styria on foot.

The number is expected to rise even further with reports that a train carrying up to 2,000 persons is due to arrive at the Hungarian town of Hegyeshalom, just across the border from Nickelsdorf, within a short time.

The ministry has been in discussion on Sunday as to where the new arrivals will be relocated.

The situation in Nickelsdorf is reportedly calm at present, with asylum seekers queueing up for onward transport.

A further 5,000 migrants stayed in emergency shelters in the national capital Vienna overnight into Sunday. Authorities said capacity was adequate, though providing care for such large numbers was proving to be a challenge.
