REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Trade Minister Thomas Lembong said some policies hinder the business world, which is why the government has issued, and will issue, deregulation packages to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian products.

"I have found that hundreds, if not thousands of policies, have hindered the business world, so we will revise them to become pro-business," he said at a discussion with an editors-in-chief forum here on Friday.

The first and second phases of economic policies issued last month are aimed at abolishing all obstacles to the development of the business world, he said.

"The President's message is clear, that we must scrap and revise all regulations impeding the development of the national economy. Don't issue normative policies. The policies must be clear and focused," he said.

The minister noted that the Trade Ministry is one of the agencies which have come under the spotlight, because many of its regulations have hindered the nation's economy and, therefore, he has taken prompt steps to revise them.

"Some ministerial regulations were made a long time ago and are no longer relevant to the present era. Also, some regulations were made, but they failed to improve the competitive edge," he said.

He added that the ministry has revised nine of its regulations under the deregulation and de-bureaucratization program, as a follow-up to the first phase of the economic policy package.

"Two weeks after the economic policy package was announced, I have signed nine (revised) ministerial regulations," he said.
