REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The impact of El Nino this year was expected to be lasted until the beginning of 2016, in January-February. As a result, the rainfall was expected to be below normal until early next year.

Forecaster of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Yogyakarta, Etik Setyaningsih, said influence of a strong El Nino would be felt until December 2015. Even so, El Nino would still have an impact in early 2016.

"Although early rainy season in Yogyakarta is expected in mid-November, but rainfall is still below normal," she said, Monday (26/10).

Therefore, the drought was still expected to hit a number of areas. In Southern Gunung Kidul, she added, the rain would be in early December.

Related to this dry drought, water discharge of Regional Water Company (PDAM) Tirtamarta Yogyakarta fell by 10 percent. However, distribution still continued to be applied evenly and it was not yet using rotation system.

According to Director of PDAM Tirtamarta Yogyakarta, Dwi Agus Tri Widodo, PDM relied on water sources from 33 deep wells, nine shallow wells, and springs in Kalikuning Sleman to meet the water needs of the customers. Total discharge was 550 liters per second. Meanwhile, the decline in the discharge was up to 10 percent.

"We've coordinated internally to address the decline in discharge," said Dwi Agus.
