Victims of smog in Riau reach 97,139 people

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Riau Provincial Health Department recorded casualties due to smog had reached 97,139 people for various diseases. The data was obtained until 30th October 2015.

"Of the total of victims, there were 81,514 people with acute respiratory infections, 1,305 people with pneumonia, 3,744 people with asthma, 4,677 people with eye irritation, and 5,899 people with skin irritation," said Chief of Riau Provincial Health Department, Andra Sjafril, in Pekanbaru, Sunday (2/11).

According to Andra, the data was collected from health centers, health posts at eight points in Pekanbaru, mobile health posts, and health posts in Riau. Groups of age which were vulnerable to be affected by various health problem, were elderly, pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and people with heart disease and hypertension.

"Mrs. Khofifah Indar Parawansa in health posts of Cipta Karya Health Department, Jl. SM. Amin, provided humanitarian assistance to the victims," he added.

In addition, Minister of Social Affairs also asked the government of Riau to continue socialization of standard index of air pollution (ISPU) in the respective regions, so that the handling of the smoke at a dangerous level could be alerted, including the evacuation process.
