Indian VP to visit MPR, DPD offices

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari is scheduled to visit the offices of People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and Regional Representative Council (DPD) in Senayan, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.

"Vice President Ansari is scheduled to visit the offices of MPR and DPD at around 9 am West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) today," Indian Embassy spokesman Madan Kumar Ghildiyal said here on Tuesday.

According to him, the Indian vice president, concurrently the chairman of Indian Senate, will hold a discussion with the chairmen of MPR and DPD, Zulkifli Hasan and Irman Gusman.

The meeting aims to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries' representative institutions.

"After the meeting with Zulkifli Hasan and Irman Gusman, Ansari will make his way to Shangrila Hotel for a business gathering between Indonesian and Indian business people at around 10 am, WIB," Ghildiyal said.

The Indian vice president plans to fly to Denpasar, Bali, at 1 on Tuesday afternoon to witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on health research by Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Gurjit Singh and the Rector of Udayana University, Prof Dr Ketut Suastika.

Ansari visited Indonesia on 1-4 November 2015 at the invitation of Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

During his visit, Vice President Ansari was accompanied by four members of the Indian parliament as well as some state officials and representatives of businessmen of Indian origin.

Earlier on Monday, Ansari and Jusuf Kalla witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of cooperation in new and renewable energy as well as the cooperation program of cultural exchange for 2015-2018 period.

The Indonesian and Indian governments will also sign a memorandum of understanding to establish cooperation in the fields of new and renewable energy and cultural exchange.

The two countries will also exchange notes of acceptance and implement reciprocal agreements of extradition and legal aid.

Since the election of new governments in India and Indonesia in 2014, there have been high-ranking engagements between officials of the two countries.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Widodo in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, in November 2014 on the sidelines of the 25th ASEAN Summit.
