REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Sea Transportation Director General of the Transportation Ministry Bobby Malahit here on Monday signed contracts worth Rp1.4 trillion with 16 shipbuilding companies for the construction of 39 vessels.
The 39 new ships expected to reach remote areas, will include a two thousand gross tonnage (GT) ship, 20 ships weighing 1.2 thousand GT each, four 750 deadweight tonnage (DWT) ships, and 14 relatively small boats, Malahit revealed.
The ships will be part of a plan to acquire 100 new ships within the period between 2015 and 2017, including two 500 DWT ships, two 200 DWT ships, 25 ships of two thousand GT, 20 ships of 1.2 thousand DWT, 11 ships of 750 DWT, 15 semi-container vessels weighing 100 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), 20 relatively small boats, and five cattle ships.
Meanwhile, 32 vessels, whose contracts had been signed earlier, are now being built.
"This is the third such instance of contracts being signed for the procurement of new ships," he remarked.
The first singing took place on August 11, while the second one was signed on October 23 this year.
"The procurement of new ships is aimed at improving connectivity and accelerating regional economic development in the outermost and remote regions," he noted.
