Sriwijaya FC beats PBR 3-2 in General Sudirman Cup

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MALANG -- Sriwijaya FC soccer club defeated Persipasi Bandung Raya (PBR) 3-2 in a penalty shootout in the General Sudirman Cup tournament which took place at the Kanjuruhan Kepanjen stadium on Saturday night.

In the first half of the match, PBR inched ahead through Gavin Kwan's kick in the 34th minute, and till the end of the first half, the score was 1-0.

In the second half, Johanis Nabar of the Sriwijaya FC scored the goal in the 74th minute, thus the score ended 1-1.

After the 90 minute game ended in a 1-1 draw, the referee decided to go in for the penalty kicks in accordance with the specified regulation of the Sudirman Cup event that does not allow extra time.

First executors PBR's player Leonard Tumpamahu and Sriwijaya FC's Syaiful Indra Cahya successfully scored a goal each in the penalty shootout to make the score 1-1.

The goal by second executor Kim Jefry Kurniawan of the PBR made the score 2-0 but Sriwijaya FC's Abdullah Maiga also successfully scored a goal to make the score 2-2.

The last three executors of PBR failed to score goals but Sriwijaya FC's third executor also failed to score a goal.

Ichsan K determined the victory for Sriwijaya FC following his successful penalty kick to finally make the score 3-2.

Although Sriwijaya FC still had one penalty kick to carry out it did not take it because it was already impossible for PBR to catch up.

Meanwhile, on Thursday night (Nov 19) Sriwijaya FC beat Persegres Gresik United 1-0 in another match at the Kanjuruhan Kepanjen stadium.

After defeating PBR, Sriwijaya FC will move to the major eight round.

As many as 15 soccer clubs are participating in this soccer event that started on November 10. The tournament was initiated by the Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander.

The soccer tournament is being organized to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Indonesian military (TNI).

The General Sudirman tournament qualifiers that started on November 12 will continue till December 22, while the semifinal will be held in each of the semifinalist`s home (in a home and away format) from January 9 to 17, 2016 and the final round will take place at the Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on January 24, 2016.
