REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- Within a month, earthquakes has shaken Maluku at least nine times. The average of the earthquake magnitude was between 5.0 to 5.9 on the Richter scale (RS).
The last earthquake, measuring 5.2 RS, shook Seram Island and Ambon, Maluku, on Tuesday (29/12) morning. Based on data released through official website of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at 01:26 local time. Meanwhile, the location of the epicenter was 64 kilometers southwest of Seram with a depth of about 10 kilometers.
"The epicenter was located at 25 kilometers east of Ambon Island or 38 kilometers south Kairatu, West Seram," said Head of Observation BMKG Maluku, Lukito.
BMKG estimated the tectonic quake, which lasted for five to 10 seconds, did not to cause damage to buildings, because its strength was still below 6 magnitude.
"We urge residents in Ambon and Seram Island to remain vigilant, despite the 5.2 magnitude tectonic earthquake is no potential to cause a tsunami, or tidal wave," he explained.
According to him, so far there were no reports of damage to buildings or injuries, but BMKG would continue to monitor whether there would be aftershock.
