Ministry of Maritime to sink 70 illegal fishing vessels

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries stated, 70 illegal fishing vessels were waiting to be sunk after the trial was completed. Dozens of vessels were found to have conducting illegal fishing.

In a press conference "Reflections End of 2015" in the Ministry Office on Tuesday (29/12), Secretary General of Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sjarief Widjaja said, the 70 fishing vessels were still in legal proceedings after the appeal. There were 177 vessels in total, that have been arrested throughout 2015.

"There are 70 vessel that are still in the process (trial), so that we still have vessels to be drowned," he said.

Sjarief added, in the near future, the number of vessels to be sunk would continue to grow because the Ministry intended to continue the policy. According to him, the effect of the policy was huge to improve the welfare of Indonesian traditional fishermen.

"Next year, this policy will still be continued," said Sjarief.
