REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that number of poor people in Indonesia in the period of September reached 28.51 million people or 11.13 percent of the total population. That means, the number of poor people decreased by 80 thousand people compared to the period of March 2015 that reach 28.59 million people.
"The poor population was reduced, both in urban and rural areas," said Suryamin in his presentation at BPS office, Monday (4/1).
Suryamin added, the number of poor in urban areas was recorded to reach 10.62 million people, decreased by 30 thousand people compared to March 2015. While in rural areas, the number of poor people fell from 17.94 million people to 17.89 million people.
He said the government should have a special strategy so that poverty could be reduced quickly.
"The poverty rate is at the level of 10-11 percent, it is difficult to be lowered significantly," he explained.
