REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla said economic inequality in Indonesia was in critical condition. He called if the condition was left, then Indonesia could experience Arab Spring.

"Arab Spring in the Middle East started because gini ratio of 0.45. Indonesia is now 0.41 and 0.43 in urban areas. It's a yellow light," said JK in Vice President office, Jakarta, Wednesday (13/1).

He hoped economic inequality was not widening. To overcome economic inequality, JK said the government should impose a tax policy for the people who can afford.

"Taxes could rise if there is a better system. It is impossible to door to door," he added.

In addition, the government also sought to increase the welfare of middle class society by encouraging people to self-employed. This could be realized by provision of business credit (KUR) with little interest.

JK also encouraged the community to change the economic inequality, by increasing the effort and creativity. He emphasized, the level of welfare could be measured by economic growth and employment.

"To be stable, we have to achieve growth of about 7 percent," he said.
