REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Indonesia non government organization (WALHI) of East Java branch to oversee the trial of suspects in the murder of Lumajang anti-mining activists, Salim Kancil. The trial is scheduled to take place in the State Court of on Thursday (18/2).

The move was done after the Supreme Court (MA) decision to produce letter No. 158/KMA/SK/2015 to appoint Surabaya District Court to examine and decide cases involving suspect Haryono and friends.

"We will continue to oversee the trial of Salim Kancil case. In addition, [this is to show] our solidarity with the movement to refuse sand mining in the southern coastal area of ​​East Java," said Division of Advocacy and Campaign of WALHI Rere Christanto to Republika.co.id in WALHI secretariat, Surabaya, Monday (15/2).

At the end of last month, the case file has been transferred from Lumajang court to Surabaya. There are 4 files about mining, 4 about murders, 7 files about docket beatings and 1 file for money laundering.

At the same time, it also handed over 27 suspects, one of them  former village chief Selok Awar-Awar, Haryono as well as a number of items of evidence in the form of four cars, three motorcycles, and 2 units of excavators. There was also a cash amounting to Rp 500 million and tools used to murder Salim Kancil.

Rere hopes for justice in the trial. WALHI East Java also claims there are other actors behind the murder of Salim Kancil. However, most of them have not been revealed. Therefore, he encourages police to continue to investigate and search for other suspects.

"The worst thing is to name village chief as suspect, that if there are other parties behind the motive, its for the police to seek intellectual actors behind this," he said.
