REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The economic potential of conservation areas in Indonesia has not yet been exploited maximally, according to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).
Conservation areas which have economic potential include nature tourism areas, water resources, and carbon, geothermal, and plant potential and wildlife, Secretary of the Directorate General of Ecosystem and Natural Resource Conservation of the KLHK, Novianto Bambang W said.
Indonesia now has some 551 conservation regions covering some 27.2 million hectares with various forms of uniqueness and natural attractions. It has a potential of 6.5 billion cubic meters of water, 5.935 megawatts of geothermal and 392.68 million tons of carbon, he said.
"The economic potential of the conservation areas could not yet be maximally utilized because data about it has not yet been fully mapped," Novianto said in a weekly discussion with the media Thursday.
The Indonesian conservation areas are vast, including nature preserves, wildlife reserves, national parks, and nature tourism parks, in addition to hunting parks and forest parks, he said.
