REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has received no report of casualties or damage to property after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Garut District, West Java, on Wednesday at 9:45 p.m. local time, its spokesman stated.

"There has been no report of casualties or material damage. The temblor was quite strong, but it caused no damage," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of the agency's data and information center and public relations service, noted in a press statement released on Thursday.

The agency has continued to conduct on-field monitoring to evaluate the impact of the earthquake, he noted.

"The eight sub-districts in Garut District --- Pameungpeuk, Bungbulang, Cisompet, Caringin, Banjarwangi, Singajaya, Mekarmukti, and Cikelet --- are safe. No material damage was found there," he revealed.

Nugroho remarked that the local residents felt an aftershock measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale at around 10 p.m. local time on Wednesday. The epicenter of the aftershock was located southwest of Garut at a depth of 61 kilometers (km).

"The local people are carrying out their activities as usual. However, we urge them to stay on alert for an earthquake, which can suddenly occur. An earthquake cannot be forecast. It can happen anytime without prior notice," he emphasized.

The 6.1-magnitude quake forced several residents of Garut District to rush outdoors.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 101 km southwest of Garut, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated on Wednesday night.

The earthquake was not only felt by the people living in Garut but also by the residents in the neighboring districts of Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Bandung.
