REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- The Terra and Aqua satellites detected 27 hotspots in eight districts of Riau Province on Monday at 5 a.m. local time.
Of the 27 hotspots, 11 were found in Indragiri Hilir, five in Dumai, three in Rokan Hilir, two each in Bengkalis, Siak, and Pelalawan, and one each in Meranti and Rokan Hilir," Sugarin, head of the Pekanbaru meteorology station, stated here, Monday.
Twelve out of the 27 hotpots were confirmed to have originated from forest and plantation fires, he noted.
"Of the 12, seven were detected in Indragiri Hilir, three in Rokan Hilir, and one each in Bengkalis and Dumai," he stated.
The forest and plantation fire task force in Riau has deployed two MI-8 helicopters to help extinguish the fires.
Piloted by Russians, the two choppers will stay in Riau until June 2016 to put out any forest fire.
