REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit Pegunungan Bintang district in the easternmost Indonesian province of Papua on Tuesday.
The epicenter of the earthquake which struck at 01.19 a.m. eastern Indonesian time was located 32 km northwest of the district at a depth of 113 km, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Office in the provincial capital of Jayapura said.
The earthquake was so strong that it forced many people to rush outdoors, chief of Pegunungan Bintang district police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Yusuf Wally told Antara.
"There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage," he said.
