REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chief of the Indonesian Police General Badrodin Haiti opened the 16th Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) at Hotel Borobudur here on Tuesday.

"Every ASEAN member state takes turns to host the annual SMOTC meeting. This year's meeting brings together law enforcers, ministerial officials, and parties engaged in eradicating transnational crimes," he stated in his opening speech at the meeting.

The meeting will discuss a wide range of transnational crimes, the procedure to deal with them, and the method to analyze their modus operandi, he explained.

Haiti noted that 11 forms of transnational crimes to be discussed at the meeting were terrorism, cybercrimes, human trafficking, drug trading, money laundering, ship piracy, people smuggling, international economic crimes, endangered animal trade, illegal wood trading, and illegal fishing.

The meeting will also discuss other issues, including state borders, following the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), particularly with regard to crimes, he noted.

"The AEC policy can be misused to commit transnational crimes, and the issue will be discussed at the meeting," he pointed out.

The National Police chief expressed hope that his ranks and files participating in the meeting will be able to exchange information and intensify cooperation with the Interpol from other countries as part of the efforts to prevent and combat transnational crimes.
