REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli is exploring opportunities to forge cooperation in the field of maritime security with Greece during a visit to the country earlier this week.

In a press release received by Antara here on Wednesday, Rizal held a discussion on establishing cooperation with Greek maritime security officials and several related parties.

Some officials and economic players who attended the meeting, included Inspector General of the Hellenic Coast Guard Admiral Anthony Vidalis, Prof. Costa's Moutzaouris from the National Technology University of Athens, Georgius Fratzezos from the Eval Marine Centre, and Editor of the Shipping Finance magazine Petros Diplas.

Cooperation in the field of maritime security is of utmost importance as sea constitutes over two-thirds of Indonesia's territory, according to Rizal.

The cooperation covers not only maritime security and sovereignty but also economy.

"Every year, there are cases of fish theft, which result in losses worth US$20 billion per year. We have taken several steps to stop it," the minister noted.

Rizal said Indonesia could take a cue from the Greek coast guard, who are known to be among the best in the world.

"We can learn about improving the capacity of human resources and maritime security technology, and we can also exchange information and explore other areas of cooperation with Greece," he remarked.

In addition to exploring opportunities for establishing cooperation in the field of maritime security, on the same occasion, the minister discussed cooperation in other maritime areas, such as shipping and tourism.

According to Rizal, Indonesia can also learn from the Greek tourism sector, which is the main source of revenue for the country.

"Greece is known as a country, with its strong maritime and shipping sector. I think Indonesia can work together with Greece and learn more from the country," the minister added.
