REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Agriculture Ministry organizes massive market operations in 4,000 locations throughout Indonesia daily during Ramadan fasting month, to help stabilize staple food prices.
"So, we carry out massive market operations in 4,000 locations in Indonesia daily. A short term solution is massive operation ahead of Idul Fitri Muslim Holiday," Agriculture Minister Amran Sulaiman when observing the launch of a market operation in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, on Sunday.
Industry Minister Saleh Husin was also present during the launch of market operation supported by Artha Graha Peduli. A similar market operation was also held in Cipete Market on the same day.
The agriculture minister, the industry minister, the cooperatives and SME minister, and the president director of State Logistic Agency (Bulog) discussed the implementation of market operation in the agriculture ministry office, on Friday.
Sulaiman said the agriculture ministry needs cooperation and support of other ministries to address food-related issues.
In fact, the on-going market operations will be carried out continuously, not only during Ramadan, until commodity prices become stable, according to the minister.
"The market operations will be carried out not only during the fasting month but it will proceed until a new market structure is created," he said.
Housewives packed the premise of the operation in Pasar Minggu to buy basic necessities sold at a price lower than the regular market prices.
In the market operations, beef is sold at Rp75,000 per kilogram (kg), shallots at Rp25,000 per kg, cooking oil at Rp11,000 per litter, rice at Rp7,500 per kg, red chili at Rp18,000 per kg and essential commodity packages at Rp25,000 per package.
The commodity packages contain 2 kg of rice, 1 liter of cooking oil, 1 kg of sugar and 3 packs of instant noodles.
