REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla are scheduled to attend the 2016 International Anti-Narcotic Day at the Parking Square on Cengkeh Street in downtown West Jakarta on Sunday (June 26).
"During the event, President Joko Widodo will deliver a message and confer P4GN (national movement for the eradication of the abuse and trafficking of the illicit substance) awards on anti-drug activists for their contributions to the prevention and eradication of drugs in Indonesia," Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Commissioner General Budi Waseso, said at the BNN office in East Jakarta on Thursday.
As the highlight of the event, the BNN will open an exhibition booth to inform the public of the danger of drugs and hold a bazaar where basic necessities will be sold, he added.
The plan to hold the bazaar received support from stakeholders who are aware of the danger abuse and trafficking of illicit substance.
"Why does the International Anti-Narcotic Day fall on June 26? The UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs Crime) has declared it as part of an agreement among its member states to create a world community free from drug abuse. The move also reflects concern about and awareness of the threat of drugs," he explained.
The drug abuse has become a cause for major concern in the world, he stressed.
"Narcotics abuse is a global problem. Therefore, the commemoration of the International Anti-Drug Day is aimed at anticipating the problem and prevent people from falling victim to drug abuse," he noted.
The drug problem in Indonesia has become so serious that BNN expects it will receive the support of all sections of the community, including all ministries and non-ministerial government institutions, he emphasized.
"The narcotic problem cannot be solved by the BNN and police only but requires the entire community to come together," he affirmed.
