REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAMUJU -- The Silopo seaport in Campalagian, Polewali Mandar district, West Sulawesi province, will soon become operational to support the sea transportation and improve local economy, the Head of Transportation Communication and Information Provincial Office, Haeruddin, said.

The provincial administration has been constructing the seaport since 2009, he said here on Monday.

The project, according to him, is being financed by the state budget through the Ministry of Transportation.

The seaport will accommodate 1,000 tons of cargo and has adequate facilities to support the logistic flows from and to the district and areas in the vicinity.

"The seaport will definitely support the local economic activities, especially when it comes to loading and transporting the natural resources from the district to other areas in West Sulawesi and other provinces across the nation," Haeruddin said.

Polewali is considered fertile with large paddy farms as well as plantations for chocolate and coconut. The regency covers both, the coast-line as well as mountain areas.

Mandar is an indigenous ethnic group that forms the majority of the population in the district.
