REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (Menristekdikti) Mohamad Nasir has confirmed universities in Indonesia expected improving its quality in the future because now is Asean Economic Community (AEC) era.
"The quality needs to be improved and it should start from its resources. One of them is lecturers minimal graduate from doctorate degrees (PhD)," Nasir said at dialogue in Riau University (Unri), Pekanbaru, Riau, on Saturday (23/7).
To obtain this degree, Nasir does not deny there will be a number of lecturers who questioned its cost. According to Nasir, his ministry has provided as many as 2,300 scholarships in Indonesia and abroad for lecturers.
"It is big number," he said.
Even Taiwan has offered 1,000 scholarships for lecturers who are interested.
In addition to Taiwan, Saudi Arabia also has provided 250 scholarships in non-religious program. Even in September there will be cooperation, including the possibility of scholarship offer with the Germans and the British. The end of July, he continued, it will also cooperate with China in order to offer a scholarships.
"It is great opportunities and private colleges also can take advantage of this," said Nasir.
Therefore, Nasir asked the lecturers not to make reason to not go to college just because of the fee. The lecturers only need to prepare themselves as best as possible in order to get it.
If the lecturers can be doctor, Nasir encourage them to contribute in improving the university. This includes encouraging the publication of research at the international level. Related research publications, Nasir reminded, the rectors and deans to set target a number of research publications of lecturers.
"For example, professors are required to make 15 international publications. If this can run massive, reputable of universities can be better," he explained.
