REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has cooperated with "Global Fishing Watch," sharing its data transparently in a program initiated by non-governmental organizations and Google.

"We have become one of the first participants to share our Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data," the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Susi Pudjiastuti said at a press conference held at her office here on Thursday.

Minister Susi during her working visit to Washington DC, the United States, from September 14 to 16, had delivered a speech, along with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry at the launch of Global Fishing Watch.

Global Fishing Watch is a program in which the public can monitor fishing activities anywhere in the world free of charge and in real time.

The program is initiated by two non-profit organizations-Oceana and SkyTruth-in cooperation with Google.

At present, Global Fishing Watch still uses an Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to show fishing activities across the world.

Global Fishing Watch is seeking to get VMS data to complete the AIS data it has.

There is a strong commitment towards transparency from governments across the world to access VMS data.

Minister Susi said she hoped that Global Fishing Watch's activities would help active netizens and anyone who cares about the sea to participate.

"Global Fishing Watch is financed by Leonardo Di Caprio (celebrity and Hollywood actor)," Minister Susi said.
