REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- The Garut District Administration on Tuesday estimated that the flash flood caused by the overflowing Cimanuk River that hit Garut District in West Java caused losses running into Rp158 billion (roughly US$12 million).

Secretary of Regional Planning and Development Board (Bappeda) of Garut, Agus Ismail, said here on Tuesday that the losses were estimated after reviewing the ruined road infrastructure, irrigation canals, hospitals, schools and residential structures that suffered damage. "We will have better evaluation and this is still a temporary (estimation)," Ismail added.

The board will hold a joint meeting with the East Java administration to propose certain plans for constructing vital infrastructure. The board has asked the provincial administration to build 60 classrooms in the impacted area to provide local students access to education. "From the 60 classrooms proposed to be built, 30 have been approved," Ismail disclosed.

The local authority will also construct some flats where the displaced people can take shelter. These are planned to be built in the Karangpawitan sub-district. At least 30 people were reported dead, while 22 were still missing in the flash floods in Garut on Sept. 20. The flood was caused by the overflowing Cimanuk River after heavy rains on Tuesday and wreaked havoc in several sub-districts such as Bayongbong, Garut Kota, Tarogong Kaler, Tarogong Kidul and Samarang.
