REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KENDARI -- The Indonesian National Police called on people not to misuse social media to provoke each other. "If the police find signs of misuse, they will trace the perpetrator to enforce the law," National Police spokesperson Brig. Gen. Agus Rianto said here on Tuesday.

He urged people who use social media to utilize the technology appropriately, following the regional elections. "Social media is prone to being used to insult the regional head candidates," he affirmed.

Therefore, Agus called on people not to use social media to host a black campaign. If people do not agree with one of the candidate pairs, they should not insult them over social media.

In addition to the election scenario, he warned people not to disseminate information related to the activities of radicalism. "All regional police have formed a special team to oversee sites on social media that provide information on radical activities," he noted.

The police will take firm action against perpetrators who spread information on radical activities, including inciting and inviting other communities to join. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had earlier released the official wealth report for regional head candidates to supervise the 2017 simultaneous regional elections. "Effective supervision of regional elections would involve the public because they are well-informed of the quality of the regional head candidates," KPK deputy chairman Alexander Marwata said.

The public will know whether a regional election is being conducted transparently or not, because they are involved in it. He urged the public to report any irregularities they might find during the simultaneous regional elections to the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) or law enforcers.

Meanwhile, KPK Chairman Saut Situmorang said the group had established cooperation with Bawaslu in upholding the laws governing the simultaneous regional elections. "The law contains criminal sanctions against moneyed politics," he stated.
