REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JEPARA -- The Government has set a target of developing and revitalizing some five thousand traditional markets by 2019, or one thousand markets annually. Each market had between 200 and 500 traders having direct contacts with local community members, Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said when visiting Pecangaan market, here, Sunday.
From Pencangaan market, the minister visited Bangsri market also in Jepara. "My attention is more to public markets, and the priority is for small markets because they are for low income people. The target is to revitalize 5,000 markets by 2019," he said.
For big-scale modern markets, the ministry has encouraged the private sector to participate in their development. In 2015, the government built and revitalized 1,002 traditional markets, or 99 percent of its plan.
This year, 878 traditional markets are planned to be constructed or revitalized. Since the beginning of the Joko Widodo administration in October 2014, a total of 1,880 markets had been either built or revitalized.
