REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla has urged the police to closely monitor activities on the internet to check any attempts to spread radicalism online. "The information technology development and wider access to internet has been used to carry out propaganda for terrorism," he said on the sidelines of the general assembly of International Police here on Monday.

He V Youth are trying to learn more about and imbibe radical ideology, thanks to the ever widening internet access.

Kalla stressed that he has been noticing a lot of people trying to project a wrong kind of idealism which can lead to the spread of radicalism. "The internet is being misused a lot. The youth are learning to make bombs and explosive devices through the internet," he cautioned.

In view of such developments, countries need to cooperate and put up a joint fight against radicalism and act against those perpetrating such propaganda. He argued that intelligence sharing was the need of the hour as terrorism poses a big challenge to the world, requiring the Interpol to take firm actions. "I hope the general assembly (of Interpol) will be able to underline the global interest in protecting people," he noted.

Although Indonesia is known for having successfully fought terrorism, the country still needs intelligence inputs from other countries. Therefore, cooperation is needed between countries with regard to exchange of information about networks and perpetrators of terrorism.

The Interpol conference will not only discuss law enforcement against ISIS but also prevention and eradication of radicalism. Indonesia's police chief General Tito Karnavian said the conference, being held from November 7 to 10, will discuss cyber crimes, organized as well as cross border crimes such as terrorism, human trafficking and credit card frauds.
