REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia's Attorney General HM Prasetyo has said his office was seriously pursuing the case of alleged blasphemy against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), the currently non-active governor of Jakarta. An investigation team has been set up for the purpose.

The Director of Human and Property Crimes, Ali Mukartono, heads the team of the Attorney General Office (AGO), Prasetyo informed here on Monday. The AGO has selected one of the best prosecutors to handle the case since it is a very important case currently in the national spotlight, he added.

He claimed that his office is ready and is awaiting relevant documents from the Crime Investigation Department (Bareskrim) of the Indonesian Police. The team will study every relevant official document and other materials concerning the Ahok case.

Earlier, the Indonesian police had confirmed that Ahok would be summoned on Tuesday for questioning as a suspect regarding his alleged blasphemous statements on a Quranic verse. "The questioning session will take place at 09.00 am local time at the Indonesian Police Headquarters' main building," the National Police spokesman, Inspector General Boy Rafli Amar, told journalists here on Monday.

Amar pointed out that Ahok, who was named as a suspect in this alleged blasphemy case on November 16, 2016, was accused of violating Articles 156 and 156, point a, of the Indonesian criminal code. "Thus, this case has nothing to do with the violation of the Electronic Information and Transactions (UU ITE) Law," he explained.

The Jakarta police chief, Inspector General M. Iriawan, called on the people not to go ahead with the plan to stage a massive rally on November 25, 2016, because the legal action in the case is already on. He said the people should trust the police investigators to finish their probe into this case of blasphemy. In contrary, Ahok's loyalists must also respect the legal process and the police's decision to name him as a suspect.
