National police arrest three men returned from Syria

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU – The National Police arrested three Indonesian citizens who were deported from Syria. They were allegedly wanted to join the war.  “Yes, right. There were three citizens who allegedly wanted to join Syrian war,” said the Chief of Public Information Bureau (Karopenmas) Brig Rikwanto, in a short message on Sunday (Dec 25).

The three men were Tomi Gunawan (18) from Pekanbaru, Jang Johana (25) from Bandung and Irfan (21) from Jakarta. They claimed that they did not know each other.

According to Rikwanto, they were arrested in Syria on December 5. The Syrian authorities found that they were indicated to join a forces to fight in the conflicted country. The trio were deported through Istanbul Airport, Turkey.

The Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88) Anti-terror Unit immediately arrested them on their arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten, on Saturday (Dec 24). They were taken to the Brimob headquarter, in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, to be investigated.
