REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Zahro Express passenger ship's fatal accident on Sunday morning should serve as a lesson to improve marine transportation. "I offer my deepest condolences to all victims of the ill-fated Zahro Express," Vice Chairman of the Jakarta Legislative Council Triwisaksana stated here on Wednesday.

Triwisaksana expressed concern over the accident that lead to the deaths of 23 passengers. "As many as 22 passengers were injured, and 17 are still missing. The ferry was reportedly carrying 184 passengers," he remarked.

He said that management of the transportation system should be evaluated, and any shortcomings should be addressed. "The officers should inspect the ships' maintenance records and their operational eligibility accurately," he stated.

The police had earlier found a difference in the number of passengers declared on the boat manifest and the actual figure of those onboard. The local media reported that according to the ships' passenger list, there were 100 passengers, but it was actually carrying around 180 people.

Meanwhile, the transportation ministry has coordinated with the relevant parties to tackle the problems. The passengers who were killed or wounded in the accident will receive compensation. The ministry will also make efforts to improve services at the port.
