REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The police named two suspects over alleged violence and deaths of three students during an orientation program by the Indonesian Islamic University's (UII's) mountain climbing club (Mapala UII) on Mount Lawu in Karanganyar, Central Java. "The suspects, known by their initials MW and AS, are seniors and members of the board of Mapala UII," a spokesman of the Indonesian Police Senior Commissioner Martinus Sitompul stated here, Monday.

The two suspects were detained early Monday in Yogyakarta following the revelation of the case on Sunday. "The suspects were arrested and are being held at the Karanganyar police headquarters for further questioning," he noted.

MS is a UII student from Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, while AS is a student from North Kalimantan Province.

During the investigation, the police had questioned 16 members of the Mapala UII board and organizers of the orientation program. "Tomorrow, we will summon some 16 witnesses of the organizers. There is also a possibility of naming some of them as suspects," Sitompul added.

Muhammad Fadli, Syaits Asyam, and Nurfadmi Listia Adi lost their lives during the orientation program titled "The Great Camping" and organized by UII's Mapala UII on Mount Lawu on Jan 13-20.

The program, attended by 34 participants, has also led to injuries to 10 students who are being treated at the JIH Hospital in Yogyakarta.
