REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – A senior researcher from Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI) Siti Zuhro said the democration in Indonesia has been degrading recently. She saw there were still problems between ethnics, religions, races, and groups in Jakarta election. “I am worried, if our democration keeps going like this, we will end up saying democration is enough. Why? There is no need. Chaos, noises, demonstrations, ethnics, religions, races, and groups sparked again, Bhineka Tunggal Ika is unused. I think Indonesia is degrading,” said Siti during a discussion in Jakarta on Friday (March 17).
Siti argued that Indonesia should be more mature in implementing democration. There should be tolerance between ethnics and religions. The problems on ethnics, religions, races, and groups should not be found in regional election. “Who create this situation? Who starts and who responds? If it was the elites, we need to say that the elites have made mistakes. The societies responded it unreasonably,” she said.
Siti said the problems between ethnics, religions, races, and groups should be avoided. It was a latent danger which would impact on the national unity. It is used as political commodities by the regional elites.
The conflict was commonly happened as there were significant social and economic gap between the natives and the comers or the majorities and the minorities. The democratic values were not fully understood. Therefore, many candidates did everything to win the election. "This should not be repeated in other regions. The bad lesson learned should not be copied-pasted,” she said.
