REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ahmad Doli Kurnia, a young Golkar Party politician, believed that the acid attack against Novel Baswedan, a senior investigator of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), is related to the high-profile corruption cases Baswedan was handling.

"It is difficult not to draw a conclusion that the attack against Novel is closely related to the mega corruption scandals being handled by the KPK lately," Kurnia, leader of Golkar's youth organization, stated here, Wednesday.

Most corruption cases involve several elites of this country. He suspected that Novel has become a victim of those who bore grudges against him for handling corruption cases.

He regretted that the senior investigator could easily become a target of attack.

"Is it a proof that our security system is so fragile that a legal enforcer could be easily attacked," he questioned.

He urged the police to arrest the attackers and reveal the motives behind the attack.

"We, the younger generation of Golkar Party, continue to support Novel Baswedan in his efforts to eradicate corruption in Indonesia. We pray for Novel's recovery, so he could resume his work," he said.

Novel was attacked by two suspects riding a motorbike who hurled acid on him while he was on his way home after performing the dawn, or fajr, prayer, at a mosque near his house on Tuesday morning.

He suffered acid-induced injuries to his face, particularly his left eye. On Wednesday, he was taken to Singapore for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the Muslim-based United Development Party has urged the Indonesian Police to quickly uncover the motive and perpetrator behind the acid attack on the KPK investigator.

"This case is closely related to Novel Baswedan's professional background as the graft body's investigator," the party's senior politician Muhammad Romahurmuziy noted in a press statement made available to Antara here, Wednesday.

Romahurmuziy said this criminal act could not be separated from corruption cases that Baswedan has been handling at the graft body, so the police should be able to arrest those responsible and bring them to court.

"The first task that the police should do is to capture the attackers and then probe into those ordering them to commit the crime," he emphasized, adding that a failure to solve the case could likely trigger similar crimes against other law enforcers.
